Preakness prediction
#1 Orb (Rosario up for Shug McGaughey) looks very likely to go to Belmont as a live Triple Crown chance after today's grade 1 Preakness Stakes (1&3/16 miles or about 1900m, around two turns on the main dirt track at Pimlico in Baltimore, post time at 6.20 pm Eastern). By all reports, Orb has done well since the Derby, he is a class above these, the extra 100m shouldn't bother him and the race should be run to suit, with plenty of speed upfront. So Orb looks very hard to beat here. But Orb will be a short price; he is even money favorite on the morning line and odds-on ($1.60) in early wagering. Next in line was Mylute at 6-1, followed by Goldencents (8-1), Itsmyluckyday (10-1), Govenor Charlie (12-1), Departing (14-1), Will Take Charge (15-1), Oxbow (18-1), and Titletown Five (24-1). I am putting in #4 (Departing) and the speedy #8 (Governor Charlie) for the trifecta, omitting Goldencents and the 4 other also-rans coming out of the Derby. Meanwhile, the latest forecast for Baltimore is for a 50% chance of showers and a high of 72 degrees (an earlier forecast predicted a high near 80 degrees under mostly sunny skies).
