Whitney Invitational prediction
A strong field of 8 for the 86th running of this storied Gr1 event, over 1&1/8mi on main track at Saratoga. Several of these met in the Stephen Foster at CD 6 weeks ago, and I'm again selecting #1 Successful Dan, this time drawn the rails. Although #3 Fort Larned killed him by 15 lengths, he did get badly checked entering the stretch and completely lost momentum. He is 7 and lately has been giving his best performances on the synthetic track at Keeneland. But in his favor, he has a great first up record and has been working very well at the Spa, has a good dirt record, loves the distance and is suited from the #1 as he can go forward or take a sit in the garden seat, in a race where there looks to be plenty of speed on. At 12/1 on the ML, looks good value. I would actually put #5, 4 & 2 in ahead of the fav #3!
And so the numbers were 4-1-2-5! Succ. Dan started 6/1, got a long way back but closed hard down the strecth, but seemed to duck in at the 1/16 losing his momentum, to finish a 1/2L behind the highly promising #4, winning this Gr 1 at only his 5th start. And #3 Fort Larned started 6/5f but finished off the board - after making his move on the turn, he yielded in the stretch. Tri paid xxx and the first 4 paid xxxx!
