Sham Stakes at SA tomorrow

I'm going to focus on the Road to the Derby across the spring and this week's race is the 15th running of the Sham, a Gr 3 dirt mile at SA worth 10 points. The race is named for the winner of the 1973 Santa Anita Derby who is remembered for his battles with Secretariat in that year's Triple Crown Races, including Secretariat's record breaking Belmont. This year there's unlikely to be a Secretariat among the field of 8. But I am looking to #1 ST JOE BAY to also possibly wire the field from the inside, though not by 38 lengths! For mine, the main chances appear to be #1,#3,#5,#6,#7. My market framed to 126% has these (by order of PN, ML in parentheses): #1 - 7/2 (8/1), #3 - 6/1 (7/2), #5 - 9/2 (8/1), #6 - 6/1 (8/1) #7 - 9/4 (8/5). As I expect #7 CALCULATOR to start shorter, I'm looking to the speedy #1 ST. JOE BAY as my overlay play. This is how the Paulick Report sees the race: #7 CALCULATOR figures to take all the money in here after a pair of strong runner-up performances behind American Pharoah in Grade 1 races. I can’t bet him on top, though. He’s lost all 4 times he’s started and in 3 of the 4 starts he conceded ground down the lane. That just isn’t my cup of tea at a short price. #4 UNBLUNTED, a Santa Anita maiden winner, is good enough that Joe Talamo shipped north to ride him in a $75K stake at Golden Gate. While he ran 5th that day, I’ll chalk it up to him not liking synthetics and hope he rebounds returning to the dirt. #5 ROCK SHANDY has never raced on the dirt before but has the breeding to handle it and was 3rd last out in a Grade 3 on the lawn. I’ll use both of those on top with CALCULATOR pegged for the 2nd spot.
