Peter Pan Stakes

Only a field of 7 for the 60th running of the Grade 2, $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes (1&1/8 MI but only around 1 turn) tomorrow which might be a stepping stone to the Belmont Stakes next month or it could just be a test to see how a talented three-year-old handles stakes competition. In any event, according to the press, it appears the horse to beat is #6 Our Caravan, impressive nine and three-quarter length winner of the Calder Derby last month at the distance of the Peter Pan. On paper, his main contention may come from Commissioner, who finished third once and sixth twice in Kentucky Derby prep races and finds arguably easier competition. Mike Watchmaker whom I respect a lot likes #2 Fabulous Kid, which led for seven-eighths of a mile in the Northern Spur Stakes last month before tiring a bit to third but can improve in only his third career start, while #5 Tapicero tries stakes competition for the first time but comes into the race off a pair of strong seven length victories. However, it's #4 Tonalist (Rosario/Clement) whom I have on top, 3/1 in my market, 2/1 fav in the ML. According to experts he could be another contender, having won by four lengths at the distance of the Peter Pan before a fine runner-up effort in his most recent race. It's race 9 and post time is 5.28 pm ET.
